This is a 5-day training course on rural electrification with a focus on planning, implementation and monitoring of rural electrification projects. The course highlights the typical steps and key issues in planning and implementing rural electrification programs. Participants also appreciate the use of modeling tools, project implementation architecture and common implementation challenges. The course exposes participants to key themes from several rural electrification plans and programs including applicability of rural and private funds, maintenance budgets, tariffs, and technical parameters on losses and grid quality. During the course, participants get an opportunity to analyse past rural electrification plans and later visit implementation areas to appreciate the materialization of those plans.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Through successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand rural electrification planning and roles of the various key stakeholders including the government, communities and political structures
  • Know the criteria, steps and practices for rural electrification planning
  • Familiarize with some planning methods, tools and software
